Yemina Chung

Veterinary Medicine, CityU

Yemina currently studies Veterinary Medicine, her second bachelor degree, at The City University of Hong Kong. She believes that music connects people with different cultures and is passionate about Cantonese Opera and traditional Chinese music.

During her study at McGill University with a major in Anatomy and Cell Biology, Yemina co-founded the McGill Students Chinese Music Society. She also organized three concerts featuring Chinese music and Cantonese opera for the Montreal local and Chinese community. In 2018, she held her first solo concert in Hong Kong Shatin Town Hall, and was the Champion of the “Shenzhen-Zhuhai-Hong Kong-Macau Cantonese Opera Competition” in 2017. In addition to performance, she has been teaching Cantonese opera singing at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts for two years.

For her, combining singing, dancing, history, traditional values, language, music instruments, and martial art movements are vital for the cultivation of Cantonese opera in the younger generation. Therefore, Yemina founded the YemOpera Studio in 2020, offering lessons and performances through online platforms.

With her experience and the support from the Scholarship Program, Yemina hopes  to promote cultural education through Cantonese opera and bring in younger audiences so that everyone can embrace the beauty of this intangible heritage.
