Yashica’s passion for social justice was deeply influenced by her father’s experiences with global inequality and the misuse of power. Growing up as a non-ethnic Chinese individual in Hong Kong, she witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by marginalised communities. These experiences developed in her a strong sense of justice, empathy, and a determination to drive social change through education.
During her final two years of secondary school, Yashica lived and studied alongside peers from over 90 countries. This diverse environment is a testament to the transformative power of education in dismantling structural injustice and poverty. Inspired by her classmates who escaped politically repressive conditions, she committed herself to uniting people through learning and advocating for educational equity.
Yashica has actively taught English to underprivileged students and migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong and Thailand. She has also led outreach initiatives to raise awareness about their rights. Recognising the lack of tailored support and financial barriers faced by non-Chinese speaking students in Hong Kong, she launched a social initiative aimed at helping them prepare for university admission.
Guided by the values of The D. H. Chen Foundation, Yashica aspires to become a lawyer dedicated to promoting social justice both locally and globally. She envisions empowering marginalised communities, fostering peace, promoting international understanding, and creating lasting positive change for vulnerable populations worldwide.
