Sophie Tam

Technology and Management, HKUST

Sophie approaches technology with the precision of an engineer and the strategic perspective of a business thinker. She is drawn to engineering’s ability to turn curiosity into practical solutions, as well as  the challenge of understanding how those solutions can become sustainable and meaningful in the real world.

Her involvement in the HKUST Robotics Team, case competitions and other business-focused challenges has strengthened her approach to problem-solving. These experiences have taught her to combine technical innovation with critical analysis while considering the operational, financial and human dimensions of a challenge. She is keen to deepen her commercial awareness and explore how organisations can translate innovative ideas into lasting value.

Sophie discovered her passion for STEAM education while volunteering to deliver engineering-based lessons to children from under-resourced communities. She observed that hands-on activities, introduced without first labelling them as ‘engineering’, encouraged children to explore, experiment and solve practical problems without fear of judgement. The experience reinforced her belief that technology should be accessible to young people who may not otherwise see themselves represented in the field.

Seeing The D. H. Chen Foundation Scholarship Programme as an opportunity to explore innovation that is both practical and socially responsible, Sophie hopes to explore how technology, business and social purpose can come together to create meaningful impact. By learning alongside fellow Scholars and mentors, she hopes to grow into a compassionate leader who makes innovation more accessible, inspires young people to discover their own potential, and helps translate promising ideas into solutions that benefit society.
