Anthony is passionate about applying civil engineering to create safer and more dignified living environments for older people. He is particularly interested in age-friendly design and modular construction, exploring how accessible, ready-to-assemble infrastructure and standardised designs could help shorten the construction time of residential care facilities.

His interest in accessibility has been shaped by his experience of living with severe eczema. Persistent pain and discomfort, often invisible to others, taught him how profoundly hidden needs can affect everyday life. This experience broadened his understanding of accessibility beyond physical features such as ramps and lifts, encouraging him to consider people’s lived experiences, individual needs and dignity within the spaces they call home.

Anthony brought this perspective to his service with the Kam Tin Care Team, where regular visits to older people living alone gave him first-hand insight into how inaccessible home environments and insufficient support can limit independence. Through collaborative engineering projects, he has also demonstrated an inclusive approach to leadership, encouraging quieter teammates to contribute, recognising individual strengths and helping teams work effectively.

For Anthony, becoming a Scholar of The D. H. Chen Foundation is an opportunity to strengthen the technical knowledge, empathy and collaborative leadership needed to turn thoughtful engineering into social impact. Through the Scholarship Programme, he hopes to advance age-friendly environments that respond to people’s needs and enable older people to live with greater safety, independence and dignity.
